What changes, clause by clause
Quality culture and ethical behavior
Top management must now actively promote a quality culture and ethical behavior. Up to the 2015 version this was implicit; it is now an auditable requirement. Expect questions about how leadership demonstrates it in practice: communication, example, decisions and channels for reporting problems. See the clause explained.
Awareness includes culture and ethics
Awareness now includes the organization's quality culture and ethical principles. Onboarding of new employees and training need to cover these topics. See the clause explained.
Risks and opportunities separated
Clause 6.1 was split: actions to address risks and actions to address opportunities now have their own subclauses (6.1.2 and 6.1.3). A risk matrix that treats opportunity as a "positive risk" will need a clearer separation. See the clause explained.
Climate change in the context
Climate change is explicitly included as an issue to consider in the context of the organization and in the needs of interested parties. The topic had already been added by an amendment to the 2015 version, published in 2024; the new edition incorporates it into the text. See the clause explained.
Policy aligned with strategic direction
The quality policy is now more explicitly linked to the context and the long-term strategic direction of the organization. See the clause explained.
Revised guidance annex
Annex A, which explains structure, terms and concepts, was rewritten and expanded to help interpret the requirements.
Operation, evaluation and improvement almost unchanged
Clause 8 had minor adjustments, mainly in terminology. The core requirements of clause 9 remain, with a focus on making better use of data. In clause 10, the role of leadership in continual improvement is made more explicit. See the clause explained.
Transition checklist
- Read the new edition and compare it with your system clause by clause (gap analysis).
- Define how top management will demonstrate that it promotes a quality culture and ethical behavior.
- Include quality culture and ethics in onboarding and awareness training.
- Separate risks and opportunities in the 6.1 assessment, with specific actions for each.
- Review the context (4.1) and interested parties (4.2) taking climate change into account.
- Review the quality policy for alignment with the strategic direction.
- Update the internal audit program to cover the new requirements before the external audit.
- Take the transition to management review, with a defined timeline and resources.
- Agree with your certification body on when the transition audit will take place.
How PrismaBiz helps with the transition
The gap analysis becomes a 5W2H action plan (free), the internal audit (free) covers the new requirements before the certification body does, the management review records the decision of top management, and the risks and opportunities assessment can already be separated as the new 6.1 requires.
Frequently asked questions
When was ISO 9001:2026 published?
ISO published the sixth edition of ISO 9001 on September 16, 2026, after the final text (FDIS) was approved in August 2026.
How long is my ISO 9001:2015 certificate valid?
Certificates to the 2015 version remain valid during the transition period. A three-year period is expected (until around September 2029), as in previous revisions, but the formal deadline is set by the IAF and still needs to be confirmed.
Has the structure of the standard changed?
No. The 2026 edition keeps the ten clauses of the harmonized structure for management system standards. The change is evolutionary: it reinforces, complements and contextualizes existing requirements.
Is a national version of the standard available yet?
National standards bodies publish their national versions after the international one. Until then, certification bodies work with the ISO text.
Do I need to redo all my documentation?
No. Most of the system remains valid. The work focuses on leadership (culture and ethics), awareness, separating risks and opportunities, context and policy.
