What the clause requires
Clause 7.3 applies to people doing work under the control of the organization, contractors included. They have to be aware of the quality policy, of the relevant quality objectives, of their contribution to the effectiveness of the quality management system including the benefits of improved performance, and of the implications of not conforming to the requirements of the system. The wording matters: "people doing work under the control of the organization" is deliberately wider than "employees", and an auditor can check all four items in a five-minute conversation at a workstation.
Awareness is a different thing from competence. Competence is knowing how to do the job, which is clause 7.2; awareness is understanding why it matters and what happens when it is not done. The operator who knows how to measure the part is competent; the operator who understands that a wrong measurement can stop the customer's production line is aware. Companies that treat the two as one requirement usually end up proving the first and failing the second, and the gap shows up in the same place every time: somebody who performs the task perfectly and has no idea what the task is for.
The auditor verifies awareness by talking to people at their workstation: what is your objective, what happens if this inspection is not carried out, what do you do when you find a problem. Vague answers point to induction and internal communication that are not working. Note that the evidence here is the conversation itself, not a signed list, which is why this is one of the few clauses a company cannot prepare for the day before the audit.
What changes in ISO 9001:2026
In ISO 9001:2026 awareness now also covers quality culture and ethical behaviour. People have to know these principles of the organization, which means induction and training will have to cover them too. See everything that changed in the revision.
What the auditor asks to see
- Induction of new employees covering the policy, the objectives and the impact of their work
- Regular communication of results and objectives through noticeboards, meetings or indicator boards
- Contractors and temporary staff included in the awareness programme
- People able to explain their own contribution and the consequences of a failure
Where companies most often get it wrong
- Awareness reduced to signing a copy of the policy on the first day
- Contractors working inside the process with no briefing of any kind
- The objectives of an area unknown to the people who work in that area
- Employees who do not know what to do when they find a nonconformity
Example of a nonconformity
- Requirement
- ISO 9001, 7.3 d): people shall be aware of the implications of not conforming to the requirements of the quality management system.
- Evidence
- The operator of press P-02 stated that when a part comes out with flash he "puts it to one side and carries on"; he could not say that the procedure requires the part to be identified, segregated and reported to the supervisor, nor what effect the defect has on the customer.
- Finding
- A person performing work within the system is not aware of the implications of not conforming to its requirements.
