ISO 9001 · Clause 7.1.4

ISO 9001 clause 7.1.4: environment for the operation of processes

Environment for the operation of processes: what the clause requires, the evidence an auditor looks for, where companies get it wrong and how to comply.

What the clause requires

Clause 7.1.4 asks the company to determine, provide and maintain the environment necessary for the operation of its processes and to achieve conforming products and services. The standard makes clear that the environment is not only physical: it covers social factors such as non-discrimination and a calm, non-confrontational workplace, psychological factors such as stress reduction, burnout prevention and emotional protection, and physical factors such as temperature, heat, humidity, light, air flow, hygiene and noise.

What actually has to be controlled depends on the product. In food, hygiene and temperature are critical; in electronics, electrostatic discharge and humidity; in painting, dust and curing temperature; in a design office, lighting and the conditions people need in order to concentrate. The company determines what affects conformity and controls that, which also means it is free to leave alone the conditions that do not affect anything. The decision itself is worth recording, because "we looked and it does not matter here" is a legitimate answer that an auditor can accept only if somebody actually looked.

When an environmental condition directly affects the product, it becomes a process parameter with a limit and a record: the temperature of the cold room, the humidity of the assembly area, the cleanliness of the filling line. The auditor looks for those limits and the corresponding records, and then walks the area to see whether the real conditions match what was defined. A logbook full of readings comfortably inside the limits, in a room where the display shows a different number, is a finding that writes itself.

Example of a nonconformity

Illustrative example, in the requirement, evidence and statement format
Requirement
ISO 9001, 7.1.4: determine, provide and maintain the environment necessary for the operation of the processes.
Evidence
The instruction for the electronics assembly room specifies humidity between 40% and 60%; the record for 06/2026 shows 12 days above 70% with no action recorded, a period in which 2 nonconformities were raised for oxidised contacts.
Finding
An environmental condition defined as necessary was neither maintained nor addressed.

Frequently asked questions

Does clause 7.1.4 cover occupational health and safety?

Not directly. It covers the environment needed for the conformity of the product. Occupational health and safety is the subject of ISO 45001, although many of the measures overlap.

Can a psychological factor be audited?

It can, when it affects conformity: overload that produces errors, conflict that disrupts a process. The auditor looks for whether the company recognised the problem and dealt with it.

Does every environment need a record?

Only the conditions that affect the product and need to be controlled. Logging office temperature for no reason is bureaucracy.
